Opening time never changes: the Colosseum opens at 8:30 am year-round. What changes with the seasons is the closing time — and, one hour before it, the last admission. Both are listed separately below, because mixing them up is the single most common reason visitors arrive at a closed gate.

The pattern follows daylight saving time: the long summer hours begin when the clocks go forward in late March and end when they go back in late October. The park publishes the schedule for spring 2027 closer to the date — expect the long hours to resume in late March 2027.

One detail worth knowing if you're combining sights: the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, covered by the same combined ticket, open at 9:00 am — thirty minutes after the Colosseum. If your plan is Forum first, factor in that gap.

Last admission is always exactly one hour before closing, and it's enforced strictly: the security checkpoints close at last-entry time, not at the posted closing time. In practice you should be at the entrance at least 15 minutes before the time slot on your ticket, because the security check itself takes time — noticeably longer in peak season.

The quietest windows are right at opening (8:30 am) and the final two hours before closing — in summer, that late-afternoon slot also comes with the best light on the travertine. Midday between April and October is the busiest period of all; weekdays are consistently calmer than weekends.

If you want the Colosseum at its emptiest, come in winter. In January and February the site closes at 4:30 pm, but you'll share it with a fraction of the summer crowds, and the low winter sun makes the arches glow from mid-afternoon. The seasonal table above covers daytime access — but the Colosseum doesn't simply go dark at closing. The official night programme ("A Night at the Colosseum") has historically run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8 pm to midnight, with last admission at 10:30 pm, and includes the arena and the underground. Guided night tours through authorized operators run seasonally (roughly April to October) and are the reliable way to see the interior after dark.
